Wild Card Tournaments
The NHSDLC was founded on a commitment to bringing debate to students across China. We believe that debate is a valuable skill which should be cultivated and emphasized in every school in every city, and we do our best to make that possible. We travel throughout the country and run tournaments from Lanzhou to Xiamen, from Harbin to Chengdu, in order to ensure that more students have access to debate. We believe that good debate is the product of hard work and commitment, and that anyone can be a champion, no matter where they’re from.
As part of our commitment to smaller cities and the social responsibility to expand the reach of debate, the NHSDLC is running two tournaments aimed expressly at students from outside Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. These tournaments, the National High School Debate League of China Wild Card Invitationals, will be online held on June 13th and June 21st.
Attending teams must be composed of students from Chinese cities other than Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.
Please note that only non-native English speakers are eligible to compete in NHSDLC tournaments. Students are ineligible if they satisfy either of the following conditions:
If the student has lived in a country where English is the official language for more than five years
If the student's primary language at home is English
Note: The Beijing and Shanghai tournaments will run on a modified break model. In preliminary rounds, teams from all schools will debate each other in an Open Division. All teams, regardless of origin, will participate in the same preliminary rounds. However, after preliminary rounds, there will be two separate elimination brackets. Top Chinese and international teams will compete against each other for the Open Division championship while the remaining top non-breaking Chinese teams will compete for the National Division championship. This model is similar to the model adopted by the Harvard and Stanford tournaments in the United States of America. We believe it best serves our goals of ensuring that all debaters compete at the top of their skills and face worthy opponents while also preserving fairness.
