  • Eligibility

Please note that only non-native English speakers are eligible to compete in NHSDLC tournaments. Students are ineligible if they satisfy either of the following conditions:

    • If the student has lived in a country where English is the official language for more than five years

    • If the student's primary language at home is English

The Association for Global Debate (AGD) hosts competitions in partnership with the NHSDLC for native-level English speakers. We encourage students who are ineligible for NHSDLC tournaments to register for AGD competitions. There is an AGD tournament taking place on April 13-14 in Beijing. Click here to register.

Note: the Beijing and Shanghai tournaments will run on a modified break model. In preliminary rounds, teams from all schools will debate each other in an Open Division. All teams, regardless of origin, will participate in the same preliminary rounds. However, after preliminary rounds, there will be two separate elimination brackets. Top Chinese and international teams will compete against each other for the Open Division championship while the remaining top non-breaking Chinese teams will compete for the National Division championship. This model is similar to the model adopted by the Harvard and Stanford tournaments in the United States of America. We believe it best serves our goals of ensuring that all debaters compete at the top of their skills and face worthy opponents while also preserving fairness.
