Thank you everyone who participated in the 2026 NHSDLC Winter Invitational Tournament.
Congratulations to all teams for competing on this timely and complex resolution. Debating whether the Federal Trade Commission should establish a federal regulatory framework for sports betting required students to grapple with issues of consumer protection, federal versus state authority, economic regulation, and public health.
As sports betting continues to expand across the United States, questions surrounding addiction, advertising standards, interstate coordination, taxation, and market fairness have become increasingly relevant. This resolution challenged students to carefully evaluate the role of federal oversight and consider both the potential benefits and risks of a unified regulatory system.
Through researching and debating this topic, students strengthened their ability to analyze government policy, weigh competing impacts, and construct evidence-based arguments on a highly contemporary issue. Engaging with such real-world regulatory debates develops critical thinking skills that extend far beyond the rounds.
Regardless of the outcome of your debates, you should be proud of the depth of analysis and preparation this resolution demanded. We hope this experience has further developed your confidence, reasoning, and ability to engage thoughtfully with complex public policy questions. we look forward to seeing you debate with us again in the Spring semester.
